Autoimmunity Bites.jpg

The Lupus Foundation of Virginia Charlottesville chapter’s regular monthly meeting will be this Saturday, September 4 (the first Sat. of the month) at Cville Coffee at 12-noon. Spouses, friends, and family are welcome!

These are informal, open meetings where you can come for the creative ambiance of the only place in town with a climbable turtle and Galapagos Islands mural — and stay to discuss local/regional/larger rheumatology resources, problems, and solutions.

Autoimmunity affects more Americans than heart disease or cancer, and coordination of resources critical. That’s why these meetings are open to all people who suffer from or are otherwise affected by any autoimmune disorder. We are your community resource for information and support.

National Data Bank for Rheumatic Diseases

Autoimmunity Bites.jpg

Some time ago, I had the bright idea that there should be a relatively open database that rheumatology patients could report information directly into. If you have ever had or known someone with a body, you know that the telephone game of doctors, nurses, and schedulers often renders your medical records unintelligible, inaccurate, and/or full of holes. Take out the middle men, and you get more data. Multiply this phenomenon by a few hundred and you get the idea of how much data is lost among chronic disease sufferers in the American medical system.

Naturally, someone a lot smarter than me already had this bright idea, and they actually implemented it. But I have just discovered the National Data Bank for Rheumatic Diseases. The NDBRD (or the Nada Bird, as I will shamelessly call it hereafter) is currently seeking lupus sufferers in particular to join ongoing research. They need more lupus doctors participating, too.

If you know someone with any autoimmune disorder (such as arthritis, lupus, MS, scleroderma, sarcoidosis, Grave’s, Hashimoto’s, Sjogren’s, or mixed connective tissue disorder), please send them a link to the Nada Bird and ask them to join today. Without gathering information directly from the source — patients! — we got nothing.
